This week we had fun experimenting with colour mixing. We starting with mixing primary colours to see what they would make. Later in the week the students had more fun mixing primary and secondary colours, as well as tinting them with white and black. We also had fun doing some cooperative games. The students had to work together to problem solve how they could move materials in certain ways. It was so great seeing them talk about how they could complete the task and work together cooperatively. Oh year, and our letter was "M" and our sight word was "have." ;) Happy New Year and Welcome to 2019! Here we are, right back into fun and learning! We are continuing with our weekly letter and sight word. Last week we learned about the letter "R" and sight word "me." We also continue with our 3D shape explorations, which of course means lots of building! Inquiring and wondering is a lot of fun, and exploring these wonders are even more exciting! This week we tackled one of our students "wonder" question: "How do you make paper?" As a class we researched, watched a video, and then made our own paper. The students really enjoyed the process, although some found the blender a little too loud! The hard part was waiting for the paper to dry. Have your child look at the pictures and see if they can retell to you how we made the paper. :) Our last week in December was full of exciting activities. The highlight was definitely our class performance at the school Holiday Assembly. The kids did a fantastic job singing and doing the actions for the song. We also enjoyed our last few "Days of Kindess" activities, a pajama party on the last day of school, a variety of holiday activities, and of course the school wide "Colour House" assembly with team building activities and caroling! We hope that you all had a fantastic holiday. We look forward to more fun and learning to come in the new year! What an exciting week in KC! We especially had a lot of fun at the Kindergarten pancake breakfast and decorating gingerbread cookies. We would like to thank our families and parents who helped to make it so successful by attending or sending in materials for our activities. Hopefully the children weren't too affected by the extra sugar! There was lots happening last week! Here are a few things: *Our "Kindness Challenge" continued. *We learned the letters "C" and "K." Two this week as they make the same sound! *The sight word for SK's was "in." *A Guelph police officer visited with us. *We talked about snow and read that one city got over 95 feet of snow in one year! So we went into the hallway and laid down "end to end" to see how big that would be. *We designed our own gingerbread houses and planned out how to turn the drama center into a big gingerbread house. And so much more! Look through the pictures to see! This past week we did not learn a new letter. Instead, we took a pause week, to review the first 6 letters that we learned: s, a, t, p, i, n. These are the first letters learned because they are letters that are used often and can be put together in many ways to make decodable words, such as: pan, sit, nap, pat, and tin. In math we have moved on from patterns and have started looking at numbers from 0-10 and how they work. It is important to not only be able to recognize, write and count these numbers, but we also take time to learn about how these numbers work together, such as: reading dot numbers, adding a number onto another number, and how to read a 10 frame. We also started our "Ten Days of Kindness" in which each day we will reveal a new "Kindness Challenge" and encourage the children to try to do the activity, such as: give someone a "high five" or play with someone new at recess. We have enjoyed sharing our results and tallying up or kindness. This week we talked a lot about patterns and snakes, and made lots of patterned snakes! On Friday we had a fun day doing a number of snake activities. The children were able to share what they have learned about snakes through snake patterning, journal pages and making their own snake habitats. They especially enjoying being able to share their creations with their classmates. It was a fun inquiry! Snow! And packing snow! What excitement! The children especially loved their outside time this week! Meanwhile...inside the classroom we learned about the letter "i" and the sight word "is." We continued learning about patterns and different ways to make them. As well, we did some researching and learning about snakes, which is turning into a very interesting topic! At the end of the week we did some exploring on the classroom ipads as these will become a part of our morning "table task" activities. Once a week, students will get some time to explore some educational activities. This is another fun tool to bring literacy into the classroom. We only have a few pictures for you to look at this week...we've just been too busy to take any! This week we transitioned from sorting into patterning in math. Students are learning that they can sort many ways, and are focusing on sorting by colour, shape and size. Our letter focus for the week was "P" and our sight word was "is." We have started to talk about our "wonders," things that we want to know more about. The class has identified their first interest as "snakes!" We look forward to learning more about these interesting creatures. |
